Abstract
Diabetes Mellitus is a chronic disease with therapeutic management that must carried out throughout life to prevent disease complication and improve quality of life for sufferers. The goal of treatment is to prevent complications and improve the quality of life of sufferers. This study was to find out the perspective of the elderly about DM and the therapy management that must be undertaken throughout their lives. This research is a qualitative study using in-depth interviews and data analysis using Colaizzi. The respondent were elderly, aged 60 years and more with Diabetes Mellitus (DM) in Surabaya as many as 4 people. Results: The 3 themes, namely: a) the experience of the elderly when diagnosed with DM b) reinforcing factors for adherence to therapy, c) the role of nurses expected by the elderly. The diagnosis of DM was discovered accidentally for the elderly. Compliance with therapy for the elderly is influenced by internal and external factors to avoid symptom because blood sugar abnormally. The elderly feels that this disease must be undertaken as a plan from God. The role of nurses as educators is expected by the participants in this study. DM disease that occurs in the elderly is detected accidentally because the typical symptoms of DM disease are not felt. Treatment management is carried out obediently because of good supporting factors, and nurses have a big role in providing support for the elderly to comply with treatment.
