Abstract

Breast cancer is a malignancy in the breast caused by genetic mutations. Breast self-examination (BSE) is a method for detecting breast cancer. The lack of knowledge among women of reproductive age (WRA) about breast cancer and BSE affects their behavior in preventing breast cancer. The aim of this study was to determine the influence of health education on the knowledge and attitudes of WRA in performing BSE in Bendan Village, Ngargosoka, Srumbung, Magelang. This research used a pre-experimental design with a one-group pretest-posttest design, where the intervention consisted of health education using leaflets and videos. The sample size was 50 respondents, selected using total sampling. A questionnaire was used as the instrument to measure the level of knowledge and attitudes of WRA in performing BSE. The data analysis, using the Wilcoxon test, showed a significant difference in the level of knowledge and attitudes of WRA before and after receiving health education through leaflets and videos (P value < 0.05). It is expected that the Posyandu cadres can remind and provide health education to WRA in Bendan Village using leaflets and videos, thereby helping them avoid breast cancer.
